Project Managers are often tasked with creating S Curves for clients and stakeholders to give a clearer picture of project progress.
S Curves can be created in Microsoft Project normally via exports and graphs in MS Excel. Additionally this will involve adding costs or resources to the schedule.
Project Tracker is a complimentary product that will create not only resource and cost based S Curves but will also plot curves based on duration. For many this is easiest method of reporting progress graphically. This article gives instructions on creating duration based curves from Microsoft Project.
I need help to generate S Curve of Cumulative Work, with the planned Vs. Actual lines in ms project standard or professional 2007, not exporting to excel. I have been worked with the S Curve in ms project, but only with actual line, because that I can't compare.
First of all we need to set up our project.
The next step is to baseline the project so that we have something to compare against.
Now as the project gets underway add progress at each status date. Change the status date in Microsoft Project as required.
Now we can add progress against each activity. It's useful to insert a column for % complete.
Optionally you can Update the project to move uncompleted work to after the Status date. This is useful to see the effects of any delays on the finish date of the project.
Then in Project Tracker we choose to import from Microsoft Project.
The activities are imported and the S Curve is then created and can be printed out if required.
Project Tracker will pay for itself after one update period and allow you to add more value to your project reporting. It is used widely in the construction, civil engineering, manufacturing, oil and gas and power industries worldwide.

Hello All, I am new to this forum and your help needed. I am currently working on a project using MSP 2016 and one of my schedule is non-resource loaded and cost loaded. In my monthly reporting I am expected to report S curve of actual progress against planned progress strictly with duration. The activities are strictly executed in days by an offshore rig (with a 24 hrs operation) and need help or advice on how to show planned days vs.

Any Ideas will be highly appreciated I have tried but realised the curve I created monthly does not tally with real situation of the projects. Please, any ideas or any other metrics to draw a proper progress S curve in the absence of cost and man-hours will be appreciated. I am open to suggestions and welcome all ideas please. Hi Nogie, S Curves usually deal with work and not duration. For example, in MS Project report tab, you'll find the cumulative work, actual work, baseine work which will give you more or less what you need to create s-curves, but nothing from duration only.
A suggestion could be to add a dummy resource on all tasks even if you don't use it for project tracking purpose. It will just create some work and you'll be able to start creating s-curves from there. See this tutorial: Hope this helps, Guillaume Rouyre, MBA, MVP, P-Seller.
